May 20th is Rescue Dog Day! We love seeing rescued pups blossom and thrive with love and care. Of course, our canine companions are all unique individuals. Many of the things you’ll need to get Fido should be customized for his age, weight, health, and temperament. A Fayetteville, NC vet offers some tips on this below.

Food

Ideally, Fido’s diet should be tailor-made, and suited to his specific needs. That said, many rescue dogs eat donated food, which could be anything. If you can find out what your new pet has been eating, get that brand to start. Talk to your vet before making changes. If you do make adjustments, do so slowly, over a period of several days.

Bedding

A comfy bed is a definite must. This will not only help keep your four-legged friend comfy and warm, it will also go a long way towards helping him feel safe. Orthopedic beds are always a good bet, just because of the support they offer. You’ll also want to consider shape. Small dogs and timid pups may feel more secure in beds with raised sides, while larger pups may just want to sprawl out. If you’re getting a puppy or elderly dog, choose something with a waterproof mattress liner between the cover and mattress, just in case of accidents.

Leash/Collar

There are a few things to keep in mind here as well. Fido may have quirks or phobias you don’t know about yet. Get something sturdy, that won’t break if your canine buddy bolts. You may want to hold off on retractable leashes, at least for now. These can be great, but they can sometimes get wrapped up in things.

Toys

Different types of toys serve different purposes. Some, such as puzzle toys, simply keep Fido occupied. Then, there are toys like balls and Frisbees, that are just fun for dogs to play with. Your furry friend may also enjoy having a few softer toys, as comfort items. Try out some different things, and see what your pooch likes best.

Calming Products

If your furry pal seems very nervous, you may want to consider calming products, such as pheromones. However, these may not be right for all dogs. Ask your vet for specific advice.
