Kitties have many wonderful qualities. First and foremost, our feline friends are super cute. Those furry little faces, charming sounds, and quirky mannerisms certainly do melt our hearts! Cats don’t always help very much with décor, however. Below, a Fayetteville, NC vet offers some décor tips for cat owners, or, perhaps more accurately, people who are owned by cats.

Litterboxes

Fluffy’s lavatory is a necessity, but it certainly doesn’t do much for your décor. There are some clever ways to disguise Kitty’s powder room. One option is to repurpose an old piece of furniture, such as an end table or large chest. Just cut a hole in one side for kitty access. You can also use a folding screen to hide the litter box. Some retailers even make litter boxes that are cleverly disguised as plant holders!

The Manicure Station

Is your furball tearing up your couch? Try putting clear, two-sided tape on the corner of Fluffy’s manicure station. She’ll hate the sticky feeling! You won’t have much luck getting Kitty to stop scratching the furniture if you aren’t offering her any alternatives, however. Be sure to provide suitable scratching options, such as cat towers or scratching posts.

Fur

That soft, pretty coat is one of Fluffy’s most distinctive features, but your kitty’s fur looks much better on her than it does on you! Choose fabrics that fur won’t stick to, like microfiber. It’s also not a bad idea to get washable slipcovers for couches and chairs.

Plants

Kitties may be carnivores in the wild, but that won’t stop Fluffy from nibbling on your houseplants. Make sure to choose only cat-safe plants. African violets, rubber plants, Boston ferns, and spider plants are a few good choices. Cat grass is another option, and can make a great treat for your furball.

Candles

Kitties and candles do not mix! If you have a feline buddy and a love of candles, make sure to burn your candles in secure, high places, where Fluffy can’t reach them. Consider wall sconces or shelves.

Fluffy’s Furniture

Kitty beds, towers, and toys may not win any home décor awards, but these things do make for a happy furball. Choose colors that complement your décor. Remember: a purring kitty goes with any color scheme!
